The world of simulation driving is no longer just about chasing hundreds at the Silverstone racetrack. It’s about breadth of experience. One day you’re battling oversteer in a GT3 car at Spa, the next day you’re hauling 20 tons of cargo across the Alps.
For years, sim racers have faced a vexing hardware dilemma: Specialization vs. Space.
If you wanted to drive Formula 1, you needed a reclining, aerodynamic seating position. If you wanted to drive trucks or rally cars, you needed an upright position with better leverage. The result? Enthusiasts either agreed to compromises with a “middle way” that did not correspond to any discipline, or they filled their homes with several different simulators.
At SIM83, we believe that the hardware should adapt to the driver, not the other way around. Today we break down the importance of simulator versatility and show you how the SIM83-MS06 transforms from a GT beast to the king of long tracks – in less than 10 minutes.
The rise of multi-discipline sim racing
Demand for versatility is at an all-time high. According to recent data from SteamDB, Euro Truck Simulator 2 recently broke its record with over 70,000 concurrent drivers – 13 years after its release. At the same time, competing platforms such as iRacing and Assetto Corsa Competizione continue to grow the GT and Formula racing user base.
Sim racers are no longer “just” racers. They are virtual drivers looking for the perfect experience in every discipline. However, this quickly dissipates due to poor ergonomics. Driving a heavy truck in the prone position of an F1 car is not only unrealistic; it limits your visibility and control. On the other hand, driving an F1 car from the high “captain’s” seat of a truck completely nullifies the feeling of the aerodynamic reality of the vehicle.
10 Minute Makeover: SIM83-MS06
SIM83-MS06 was designed to solve the problem of multiple disciplines. It is a professional 6DOF (six degrees of freedom) simulator created to replicate the specific forces and positions of any type of vehicle.
In the video below, we show the transformation in real time from a GT (Grand Touring) setup to a Truck setup.
See the transformation
What you see in the video:
- Steering wheel change: The steering column adjusts for the larger, more laid-back angle required for heavy machinery.
- Pedal Reconfiguration: The pedal board is moved to allow a more upright seating angle. This is key to the “push down” motion characteristic of truck braking, as opposed to the “push forward” of formulas.
- Seat Ergonomics: The seat raises and flattens to provide a high position and visibility essential for spatial awareness in truck simulators.
Why ergonomics matter: The science of sitting
Why even bother customizing a simulator? Everything is hidden in biomechanics and immersion.
GT Position
In the GT setup (which we start with in the video), the driver sits upright but low, with the steering wheel closer to the chest. This allows for maximum leverage for quick, 900-degree turns of the steering wheel. Such a position reduces fatigue during high G-forces in corners and enables precise cornering (trail-braking).
Position in the truck
Driving a truck requires a completely different approach. As ergonomic studies in the logistics industry point out, the driver must sit high to maximize the field of vision over the flat nose or long bonnet. The steering wheel is larger and placed more flat, which enables the technique of “palming” in wide turns. Using the GT setup to drive the truck often leads to shoulder pain as the steering wheel angle is incorrect for the required rotation.
Position of Formula 1
Although not shown in this video, the SIM83-MS06 is equally capable of taking the extreme F1 position. This includes raising the pedals to hip height and tilting the seat back significantly. In real life, this position lowers the center of gravity and improves aerodynamics—but in the simulator, it changes the way your inner ear perceives the G-forces generated by the motion platform.
Prepare your simulator for the future
Investing in a premium motion simulator is a commitment. You shouldn’t be limited to a single genre of driving.
Whether you’re training for a competitive eSports final or relaxing after work with a cross-country drive, your simulator needs to keep up with your needs. The ability to change configurations in 10 minutes means your simulator grows with your interests. You don’t need a bigger room for a second simulator; you just need smarter engineering.
